inspired by sunflowers and poppies

If you know me outside of this blog, you might be aware of an award I won last year: People's Choice Award for the Smoky Hill Public Television Signature Auction. I'm still riding the high from this honor, as it's an award voted on by people who personally saw the work, so to have my artwork chosen was a real dream.

I donated the following piece, Sunflowers and Poppies, to the show:

Ever since donating it, I've missed it dearly. It was the first time I'd really embraced my own style as an artist, and the feedback I received from the piece was phenomenal.

I knew I had to create another piece reminiscent of this beauty, but didn't have the time until just last week.

I pulled inspiration from my original Sunflowers and Poppies piece, but made it different enough that it captures my progression as an artist.

Here's a photograph of some of the textural details on this piece. I love working on a collaged background. It provides not only a tactile texture, but a visual one as well that really does a beautiful job of busying up a plain background.

Mid-painting, I captured this shot of my palette. Since moving to the Golden Acrylics, I've noticed how they're like working with a beautiful combination of both acrylics and oil paints. They're such wonderful, saturated paints. I can't imagine how I made it this far without them!

I have already begun prepping a large three-foot canvas for another floral creation (hopefully) this week.
